Discovering  New Friends

It is a typical Sunday after church for me. I headed to the cigar lounge for a quick stick so that I may spend  uninterrupted time with the family later in the day. The sticks are never quick though, and, an hour later, I was only halfway through the cigar. For whatever reason, I wasn’t enjoying it very much anyway, so I said my goodbyes to the gang and headed home.

I spent some time with the family as well as was able to throw in a brief nap ( a bonus) before I decided maybe  should cook dinner. It was almost seven. Dinner was a hodgepodge of whatever I could throw together on the grill which turned out to be cajun catfish, bacon-wrapped, cheddar and sausage stuffed jalapenos, and hot dogs that we started boiling, but in mid-roil, I asked the wife to bring them to the charcoal alter. Oh, yeah. Did I mention the garlic pepper zucchini in butter sauce…?

As the coals elevated the meat, seafood, and veggies to heights beyond the heavens, I did something that my hectic schedule had not permitted me to do. I took the time to discover new friends by reading new blogs. Before  delving into the new ones, I had visit some of the old, yet consistetently fresh, friends. For example, I paid a visit to my girl Melzie at The CurvyGurl Chronicles. She is as every bit feminine as I am The Man. I then took a journey to my informal mentors of sorts. WeaselMomma and Melisa with one S with whom I experienced the healthy fear that kids have of men and some Mickey D. memories. I also checked out two Twitter buds, the authors of Dad Unmasked and Real Men Drive Minivans. These are proud papas just like me.

As I flipped the fish and squash over, I tapped into a some new reads that I enjoyed. Janie, at” Boobs, Ballgames, and Beer“, is the female version of my boy Jason  at “Outnumbered Is Jason Mayo“. She is in a house with a husband and heir sons. I don’t know who has it rougher, her or Jason ( yeah, I do. Jason’s got it tough:). I also visited Lynn at S3x In the Pantry and her travails with a grumpy old lady who didn’t like her music.

I then took a stroll over to Being Michael’s Daddy, whose current post gave me a taste of what his blog is all about. The title is self explanatory. Lastly, I visited The Busy Dad who was teaching his 7 year old how to grill burgers. Which reminded me…it was time to take dinner off the grill.

Please pass this along to these bloggers you know and tell them to come get their props from The Man.

Old Friends for Sale

Earlier this evening, I was watching a new show called Shark Tank. It is a series about a real people having the opportunity to pitch their ideas to a group of millionaires in hopes of the rich folks investing in their ideas in order to make their business dreams come true. As a businessman and entrepreneur, this show.

The investors are called “sharks” for a reason…they seek to invest typically if they can gain majority control over the business or these individuals’ protected ideas (i.e. patents). There was one woman who sold her idea of a “TurboBaster” for $35,000 and 2% limited royalties. There are others who have turned down six figures in order to retain their intellectual integrity. I pray that I never come to the point where I find out how much I’d be willing to sell out for. Smart business is one thing. Greed is an altogether different animal.

  • Thanks for the shout-out! If there's one thing I love, it's giving out advice (haha), so I'm honored to be one of your mentors. That Weaselmomma knows what she's talking about too.

I'm going to check out the others you linked who I haven't had the pleasure of reading yet! :)
  • Greed was more in reference to the "sharks". In her case, I think (from watching the show) she was taken advantage of, but she should never sold her intellectual property for so cheap. Even with the 2%, a shark will be making significantly more from her brainchild.

Hmmm - why would you think it greedy for the woman to sell her turbobaster for 35K and 2% royalties? It may have been the best decision for her: she did not want to go through the trouble of setting up a corp, finding startup funding, finding manufacturers, warehousing, distribution, sales, etc... Not to mention the myriad red tape and obstacles government beauracracy and regulations throw in the way... economically speaking, for her, this may have been the best choice - plus, there's no guarantee that the product would have been a success. After all the money borrowed and invested, it could have been a dud and then where would she be? She gets an amount of money up front that she's happy with, the company that bought her product takes all the risk. If it's a success she still gets paid some. Sounds like a willing economic compromise/exchange - the basis of the free market.
  • *Blushy blush* Big thanks for the shout out :-)!

Heading over to check out the others, I like new friends. Gosh, Shark Tank has really opened my eyes to a few things...for one, not allowing emotions to play a role in business deals. Like you, I don't want to be in that tank....although it often feels like I am already with the crazy Mon thru Friday drama.
  • Oh wow! Thanks for the linkage - a first for s3x in the pantry! I'm going to stop by all of the blogs you mentioned!
  • I watched Shark Tank for the first time last night.. By the end of the show I knew it was going to be one that is on my DVR list. I thought the ladies last night made the wrong choice.. They were going to get trucks and warehouses, but not have majority control of their idea. The wife and I figured that if the do well, they could always buy a percent back from each of the sharks and regain control.. But what fo I know? I still process medical claims..
  • Thanks for the props and the link love! I will check some of these out. I already have the others in my blogroll.
  • Hey Man, Your Sundays sound very similar to mine. Thanks for the shout in your post. You just made me hungry again. :)
