 Algebra. Defined.
A branch of mathematics that substitutes letters for numbers. An algebraic equation represents a scale, what is done on one side of the scale with a number is also done to the other side of the scale. The numbers are the constants. Algebra can include real numbers, complex numbers, matrices, vectors etc.

Moving from Arithmetic to Algebra will look something like this: Arithmetic: 3 + 4 = 3 + 4 in Algebra it would look like: x + y = y + x (definition courtesy of about.com)

I was helping Bae with some basic algebra homework recently. She has always been very good at math, but the work has become more challenging as she has progressed toward higher grade levels. I decided to start with a very simple formula to guage her understanding of the concept.

”Honey, algebra is simply substituting numbers with letters in math problems. The letters remain the same even though, the numbers may change,” I explained.

“For example: If A=B and B=C, then A must equal C.”

Her eyes began to light up with understanding. So she then made her own equation.

”If my brother (A) is a boy (B) and boys (B) are weird (C), then it stands to reason that her brother (A) is weird (C)!”, she deduced.

She’s a quick student. She learned that day that math is a very powerful tool when expressing indisputable logic.

figures don't lie. liars just figure.

NOT that i'm calling your sweet daughter a liar!

to piggy back on the lovely and talented WM, sounds like we have a rock/mineral debate on our hands. all rocks are minerals, but not all minerals are rocks.

nice work, my friend. to you and your daughter.

Rocks and minerals. Maybe you're right.
  • As an engineer my life is governed by the laws of physics. I love your daughters use of the rules to make a point. Very smart indeed.
  • You can't argue with math.
  • That is hysterical! Now you have work on logic. There are weird people. Many of them are boys. Some, but not all boys are weird.
Although when you're talking about brothers, I bet the girl is right on the money.

@WeaselMomma As the dad of a growing young lady, I am quite comfortable with her logic that all boys are weird. I'll take it as long as I can. #boyshavecootieswhenitcomestomybaby
